Fighting Back:  The American Working Class in the 1930s

with John Newsinger.

John Newsinger - Fighting Back: The American Working Class in the 1930s

[…] The story of the American working class in the 1930s is an extraordinary tale of mass resistance in the face of violence, racism, cowardly leadership and governments prepared to overlook the murder of trade unionists, socialists and activists in the interest of protecting capitalism.

John Newsinger’s new book is a detailed and inspiring account of the period that should be read extensively by trade unionists. In its exploration of working class struggles, the need for rank and file action, the power of the “sit in” or “workplace occupation” and the role of the trade union bureaucracy, there is a wealth of material to help us today, in our struggles against austerity. Marxism 2012

- Comments off

Crisis and austerity have exposed the insanity of our global system. Billions have been given to the banks, while billions across the planet face hunger, poverty, climate catastrophes and war. We used to be told capitalism meant prosperity and democracy. Not any more. Now it means austerity for the 99% and rule by the markets.

But turmoil at the top has been met with resistance from below. Once mighty dictatorships have crumbled across the Middle East and revolts are shaking Europe. Britain has seen its biggest strike since 1926.

Millions are fighting back, questioning this crazy system and searching for alternatives. Marxism 2012 will bring thousands of people together, from across the world, to discuss, debate and organise resistance. Don’t miss it.

Paul McGarr’s Time to Get Organised is a tool for all workers, whether in public or private sector workplaces.

The strikes in 2011 have seen more and more people join trade unions. But trade union leaders let down large sections of the working class when they failed to seize the momentum after the strikes on 30 November last year. The London strike on 28 March this year was a great success but it wasn’t the national fightback that we need.

This recent history shows that we need to have strong rank and file organisation if we are going to win.

This throws up two key challenges—how new union members can get involved—and how experienced members can encourage new recruits to be active.

Paul’s pamphlet provides practical advice on how to take those first steps—how to find your union rep and how to hold meetings. From these steps you can generate the “smell of a union presence” in your workplace. […]
